Extending a bungalow

Reviewed October 2026 · Not legal, planning or financial advice

Bungalows are wide and single-storey, which makes ground-floor extensions straightforward and opens the question of using the roof space.

Ground-floor options

A rear or side extension is easy to connect on one level and suits accessible living — a ground-floor bedroom and shower room for an older relative, for example.

Going up

Many bungalows have shallow roof pitches with limited head height, so an attic conversion may need the roof raised or rebuilt — a much larger project that needs planning permission. Measure head height first.

Wastewater

Rural bungalows often rely on a septic tank or treatment system; additional bedrooms can affect whether it is adequate.

Regulations and their interpretation change. This guide explains the position as we understand it in October 2026. Confirm what applies to your house with an architect, planning consultant or your local authority before relying on it.
